October/November 2017 Classes

Introduction to Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga

Mondays 5:30-6:30pm at Twisted Willow Studio  (6 weeks beginning November 13th)

Explore the transformative power of Ashtanga Yoga! Introduction to Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga will introduce you to the Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga philosophy, and explore the foundational poses and structure of a traditional practice.

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga has a rich and deep history. It is a dynamic and challenging practice, and is foundational to much of the yoga styles practiced in North America today. The physical practice is taught as a progressive sequence of poses (“asanas”) from Hatha Yoga, linked to the breath and repeated the same way each practice. The sequence leads the practitioner intelligently towards balance in the body, mind, and spirit.

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga focusses on yoga as a lived experience—its power is the effects you directly experience as your body and mind transform through committed practice.

Drop-in is not available for this class, but you can drop in for $12 to try it during Twisted Willow Studio's Introductory Week on Monday November 6th from 5:30-6:30pm

Stretch (Saturdays @ 9:15am)

The movements of yoga are beneficial to anyone involved in sports and fitness, or who simply wish to increase range of motion, reduce risk of injury, and sustain a healthy lifestyle. Alysia’s Stretch class takes a relaxed approach to movement in a fun and casual environment, exploring a different muscle group each week so that you can create an intelligent and safe personal stretching routine to use as a compliment to your other activities. This drop-in class explores movement and stretching from a functional fitness perspective.

Is this class right for me?
All levels are welcome with the following considerations: participants must be able to move from seated/reclining/kneeling to standing without assistance. It’s also important to let your instructor know about any past injuries and surgeries. This class is not appropriate for those in active recovery (less that six weeks post-injury or surgery). This class is highly recommended for people who do a lot of weight training, endurance sports, and sports that unevenly load the body. It is also beneficial for those who sit or stand for long periods of the day.

Flow Yoga (Thursdays @ 7pm)

Flow Yoga joins breath awareness to body movement through a continuous sequence of poses set to music. Each class will have a specific movement pattern, body focus, or pose to work towards, with modifications and props offered to support all levels in healthy body alignment.
Yoga is one of the best bodyweight movement practices around, emphasizing safe alignment and positioning as well as intelligently balancing strength-building with releasing tightness from the muscles. Class ends with seated and reclined stretches followed by guided relaxation.

Is this class right for me?
All levels are welcome with the following considerations: In addition to movement from seated/reclining/kneeling to standing, most Flow Yoga classes involve weight-bearing on hands in positions like hands and knees, or a plank (the top half of a pushup position). Modifications are possible, just let your instructor know! It’s also important to let your instructor know about any past injuries and surgeries. This class is not appropriate for those in active recovery (less that six weeks post-injury or surgery). Most people who enjoy guided exercise classes or who have any previous yoga experience will be comfortable in this class.

Deep Stretch Hatha Yoga (Tuesdays @ 7pm)

In a Deep Stretch Hatha Yoga class, seated, kneeling, and reclining poses are actively held for longer periods of time. Tendons, muscles, ligaments and joints are taken through a cold, slow and deep stretch, pairing the use of breath and gravity to release tension and create movement where there may be stagnation in the muscle tissues.
Deep breathing is used to increase the effectiveness of stretching. Because of the intensity of longer holds, modifications are provided for students of all levels to experience a pose to the fullest extent of their unique body. Classes conclude with guided relaxation. Enjoy the time to be still while nurturing the mind, body and spirit.
